5 ways to save money on your kitchen renovation

The kitchen has always been one of the busiest rooms in any home, and it’s gotten even more use over the last couple of years, with restaurants, cafes and gastro pubs closed. It’s no surprise then that a kitchen renovation is one of the most popular home renovation projects right now. But a kitchen renovation can also be a costly investment. Here are 6 simple ways to make savings on your kitchen renovation.

Kitchen counter tops - stone

Cut down on the amount of cupboards

When planning your kitchen renovation, look for ways to reduce the amount of cabinets. One easy to do this is to opt for open shelving instead of high level cabinets.

Drawers are more expensive than standard cupboards. This is because of the mechanisms required for the drawers to operate, so if you’re on a tight budget, it’s worth keeping the number of drawers to a minimum.

Dress up cabinets with stylish accessories

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a functional and stylish kitchen. Just like fashion, you can transform the look of an inexpensive kitchen by choosing the right accessories.  Companies like Superfront have a range of doors and handles that can be fitted to IKEA units. Simply adding a beautiful handle to your cabinet doors can elevate the look without breaking the bank.

Countertops

When it comes to choosing countertops, Laminate is by far the most cost-effective choice. Some German produced laminates realistically mimic other materials, including wood and granite and are also available in any shape or colour, making laminate a fantastic alternative to quartz at a fraction of the cost.

Splashbacks

Certain finishes can be harder to fit than others. Take mosaics or unusually shaped tiles, for example. They’ll take longer to install and will, therefore, be more costly. It’s best to have all of your finishes selected and purchased before your contractor starts. That way, they’ll be aware of what you’re planning to use and will price for the job accordingly.

If you’re going for a stone or glass splashback, you need to agree your socket locations well in advance as the stone and glass will need to be cut to accommodate the socket plates. Every cutout will add to the kitchen renovation cost, so again those on a budget should consider this.

Research your accessories

Any additional cupboard inserts or internal organisers will add to the kitchen renovation cost. Typically there are lots of options for these interior fittings, so it’s worth scrutinising them and sourcing ones fit your kitchen renovation budget.

Don’t skimp on the fitting.

Before you decide to have a go at fitting the kitchen yourself take a bit of time to consider if you are up to the task. The devil, as they say, is in the detail. Unless you are a comfortable tackling these kinds of projects, get yourself a good, no, a great fitter. Even the most expensive kitchen can look cheap if it’s poorly installed.
