Save money this holiday season with these DIY Christmas decoration ideas

Christmas

Are you looking for clever ways to save money on your Christmas decorations? With some creativity, you can have a fun and festive look without busting your budget. Here are some simple DIY Christmas decoration ideas that won’t break the bank.

Make time for family

Christmas seems to be coming earlier and earlier each year. I was in a large department store in August seeking refuge in the air-conditioning from the heat outside to discover its Christmas department was open for business.

It’s easy to get swept up in the madness that does accompany this lovely holiday but for me I like to keep it simple and try to make it a time for family relaxation and recuperation.

Have fun with foliage

When it comes to festive decorating you want to create a look that sits happily with the décor of your home. And it doesn’t have to cost the earth.

For easy DIY Christmas decorating ideas look no further than your garden. Festive foliage, especially anything scented like pine or eucalyptus, in vases dressed with ribbon can be visually and aromatically stunning. Don’t hold back here. Every room, even the bathroom, deserves a little bit of Christmas spirit. Combine fake and real foliage for a longer lasting display.

Bake a Christmas Cake

Sent is such an important part of Christmas and what better way to drum up instant atmosphere than to bake a Christmas cake. I inherited a gorgeous recipe that I make every year and wrap the cakes and give them as presents to friends and neighbours.

Christmas

Mix Fake & Real

One of my favourite DIY Christmas decorations is the Christmas wreath. I love Christmas wreaths and to be honest I have found a fabulous fake version which I have dressed with pine cones that the boys collected from the park, cinnamon sticks, faux red berries and some gorgeous golden bells which jingle merrily every time the door is opened.

Have some fun

You don’t have to be terribly traditional either – Use colourful satin ribbon threaded with  baubles in varying sizes to create hanging garlands. This is so easy to do and a perfect for kids to help out with.

Christmas Tree

There are some wonderful fake trees around now but I do prefer the real thing – the fun of going to choose one with the boys and the gorgeous scent in the house from the moment it’s unwrapped instantly fills the house with Christmas cheer .

Fairy lights are always a hit. I tend to prefer the warm white lights to the colder ones that seem to be much easier to find. The smaller battery-operated strings of lights are fantastic for adding some festive cheer to a house plant. I’ve woven them into my Christmas wreath to great effect too.

Merry music

And don’t forget the music! When it comes to Christmas it’s all about atmosphere so whether its Silent Night or Jingle Bells, quietly play your favourite tune and have a very merry Christmas.
